Day Five Lesson – Writing Poetry
Description
After fully engaging with the different elements of poetry throughout the week, the students will now apply what they have learned to compose their own poetry.
Environment
Asynchronous – The students will be completing an interactive lesson online at their own pace.
Objectives
The student will compose poetry using the different elements of poetry.
Prerequisite Skills
Knowledge of the different elements of poetry and how they are used to impact the meaning of a poem.

Activities
Warm-Up:
Students will take an formative assessment to test their knowledge of the different elements of poetry.

Instruction:
Students will complete an online module where they are introduced to the following forms of poetry: acrostic, limerick, cinquain and free-form. They will listen/read a variety of poems, and will learn how the poems are structured.

Activities:
Using the elements of poetry that they have learned throughout the week, the students will write their own poems. They will need to write one for each form that was introduced to them.
Assessment
Students will post their poems to the class Wiki page. They will read at least two of their classmates’ poems, and comment on the elements of poetry that they recognized within them.
